Media Week of 11/3 - 11/9

So, this week I found one way I am super grateful for media!  My husband has recently started up his own family business through Facebook.  He crochet's stuffed animals, (I guess it's called Amigurumi in the yarn world) and now he advertises his skill through a Facebook page he set up with his mom called Crochet Sensei!  He takes custom orders for all kinds of animals and objects, and his mom takes custom orders for different kinds of dolls. It's a really cute page and business has been booming ever since he set it up and posted it to all of the yard sale pages around Utah and Salt Lake counties.  This is a hobby that he uses to relax and de-stress after school, so it has been a huge blessing for us to have him be able to make a little extra income from it as well!  I'm super grateful for this social media tool that made it possible.
Check it out if you're interested in finding the perfect Christmas gift for friends or relatives! 😊

  1. Wow, that is so good! That sounds like a really neat idea, and it sure seems like it if it is doing well! Those look really good! I love how we can connect and create businesses with others all over the world with media! There are definitely some advantages to media!

Media Week of 10/6-10/12

Ok, so I'm all for equality and respect and everything, but I usually don't come across as very feminist or anything, at least I don't think so.  However, this week, I watched a movie that made me bristle about how women are portrayed in some media. I came home last night to find my husband watching National Treasure.  I had seen the movie before and we both laughed and joked about how horrible Nicolas Cage's acting is. But then I sat down and watched the rest of the movie with him, and we both grew more and more genuinely upset. The female lead in the movie, Diane Kruger, played an intelligent women, especially well versed in American History, who holds an important government job.  However, when she catches Nicolas Cage stealing the Declaration of independence, he and his counterpart kidnap her and the disrespect begins.  Throughout the rest of the movie, they alternate between telling her to sit down and shut up, and talking about her like she's not even there,...

Media Week of 12/1 - 12/7

It's December!!! Yay!!!  Ok, so I am very passionate about my side of the "When to start Christmas music" debate.  In my mind, 25 days is NOT enough time to listen to all the beautiful songs in all of the beautiful versions that are out there.  I think starting to listen to Christmas music the day after Halloween is perfect timing.  In my opinion, if you believe there is not very much good Christmas music to listen to, then you are only listening to the radio and the modern songs.  Start looking up 40's and 50's Christmas music!  That's where the best classics come from anyway! And if you disagree, then you're just wrong. 😉  As far as the argument about "Well what about Thanksgiving?" goes, I love Thanksgiving!  I think it is a beautiful time to kick off the Christmas season.  In my mind, Thanksgiving is part of Christmas.  Thanksgiving is a time to be with family, to be grateful for each other and for our blessings, and to plan for Chr...

Media Week of 10/20 - 10/26

I was really surprised by our violence in the media lecture.  I didn't realize how intense it was, or that by not showing blood and gore we are teaching that there are no consequences.  This made me really nervous, as I'm trying to navigate what rules my husband and I will create for our family about what is ok for our children to watch.  Is there anything that is safe to show our daughter? Watching Venom this week did not help my anxiety over this question.  The movie was awful on a number of levels (don't bother watching it) and definitely could have been rated R if they hadn't cut the camera away from the violence every few seconds.  I felt especially sensitive to it after our lecture, and it made me really frustrated.  Why are we as a culture so drawn to violent acts?  What makes that so thrilling to watch for so many of us?
