Media Week of 9/22-9/28

Considering how crazy life has been this week with school and work picking up steam, I really haven't been using much media.  My husband and I haven't even been sitting down to watch our shows at the end of the day this week.  However, I did enjoy watching my husband play a Lord of the Rings video game for about an hour one evening.  He rarely plays video games now and used to play only occasionally as an adolescent.  His favorites were games like The Legend of Zelda, and Fire Emblem. While these are typically single player games that may seem more isolating, my husband has very fond memories of playing these games while his siblings watched and participated by giving advice and claiming some of the characters as their own.  He also has fond memories of watching his parents or siblings play and participating with them in similar ways.  For him and his family, these games allowed them to have bonding time all together.  After our lecture on video ...

Intro

Hey everybody! Just thought I'd introduce myself real quick, especially since I forgot to do the post for the first week.  So, I'm Kathryn Passey!  I'm a senior studying Human Development and Creative Writing.  I've been married for over two years, and have an eight month old daughter who keeps me on my toes.  I'd love to be a reading specialist in an elementary school after graduation, and will follow my husband to grad school (who knows where) and decide from there if I will get my MFA in Creative Writing or pursue a masters in Speech Pathology or something like that.  So clearly, I'm pretty busy all the time, and have very little idea about what exactly me and my little family will be doing when we're done being undergrad students! 😅 I've been torn about my own media use since high school.  Back then, I would walk in to my family's living room to find my dad watching things like "The Big Bang Theory" and "Friends" at the m...

Media Week of 9/15-9/21

I really liked our lesson on the power of music today, and it really made me think about what I listen to and how it affects me. I had an experience just this week where I was driving my 14 year old brother-in-law home and listening to my favorite country music station.  I asked him if he liked country music, because most people I know either love it or hate it (or hate all of it except for Carrie Underwood 😉), and he said that he liked some of the songs, especially the love songs because they were more uplifting than the ones about drinking and such.  I knew by "and such" he was referring to songs with promiscuous sexual content.  In that conversation, I found myself defending some of the drinking songs as funny and tried to justify why some of the less uplifting country songs could still be good and fun to listen to. After our lesson and learning how much of an influence these messages can have, even when we don't realize it, I've come to a point where I want t...
