Media Week of 9/29-10/5

Some of my favorite adds are the Chick-Fil-A cow ads.  I love seeing the cow statues up on billboards off of I15, painting misspelled words about how great chicken is.  I spent my high school years in Alabama after growing up in Connecticut, and was shocked at how my new peers and friends worshiped this fast food joint.  Especially as a burger lover, I couldn't understand what was so good about chicken sandwiches.  But even while I was skeptical, I loved the ads I saw on TV.  The cows were always cute and lovable and super funny!  I eventually came to realize in part what everyone was talking about.  While I still stand by my opinion that Chick-Fil-A really does serve fast food, I do agree that out of all the other fast food I've ever tried, it is the best quality.  Their food is really good.
So now, when I see those billboards on I15 that say "Trafic Bad, Chiken Gud," I really do start craving a chicken biscuit and waffle fries.
However, those billboards have made me wonder before, why do ads that seem unintelligent work so well?  Wouldn't the message be if you eat here, you won't be very smart? But I think really, the misspellings and bad grammar makes us feel more endearing towards the cows, because their trying their hardest to communicate with us.  I think that's part of the emotional pull of those ads.  The power of advertising, and what kinds of ads work and which don't, is super interesting to me!

  1. Just last week I made a comment to my husband as we were driving down I15 about how I love Chick fil a's billboards! haha and then I wanted to go eat there too... so I guess whoever is in charge of their ads is doing a great job. :)

  2. YUM I love me some Chick-Fil-A!!! I agree that their advertising department is really on the ball in making you sympathize with the poor cows. Now all we need is a burger joint to stick up for the chickens! Haha

  3. I totally agree! My boyfriend is in the Ad program at BYU and we always talk about chik fil a and how that was such a genius ad campaign! It has been interesting to learn a lot about the world of advertising through my boyfriend and from this class. SO fascinating the things they do to grab our attention.

Media Week of 10/6-10/12

Ok, so I'm all for equality and respect and everything, but I usually don't come across as very feminist or anything, at least I don't think so.  However, this week, I watched a movie that made me bristle about how women are portrayed in some media. I came home last night to find my husband watching National Treasure.  I had seen the movie before and we both laughed and joked about how horrible Nicolas Cage's acting is. But then I sat down and watched the rest of the movie with him, and we both grew more and more genuinely upset. The female lead in the movie, Diane Kruger, played an intelligent women, especially well versed in American History, who holds an important government job.  However, when she catches Nicolas Cage stealing the Declaration of independence, he and his counterpart kidnap her and the disrespect begins.  Throughout the rest of the movie, they alternate between telling her to sit down and shut up, and talking about her like she's not even there,...

Media Week of 12/1 - 12/7

It's December!!! Yay!!!  Ok, so I am very passionate about my side of the "When to start Christmas music" debate.  In my mind, 25 days is NOT enough time to listen to all the beautiful songs in all of the beautiful versions that are out there.  I think starting to listen to Christmas music the day after Halloween is perfect timing.  In my opinion, if you believe there is not very much good Christmas music to listen to, then you are only listening to the radio and the modern songs.  Start looking up 40's and 50's Christmas music!  That's where the best classics come from anyway! And if you disagree, then you're just wrong. 😉  As far as the argument about "Well what about Thanksgiving?" goes, I love Thanksgiving!  I think it is a beautiful time to kick off the Christmas season.  In my mind, Thanksgiving is part of Christmas.  Thanksgiving is a time to be with family, to be grateful for each other and for our blessings, and to plan for Chr...

Media Week of 10/20 - 10/26

I was really surprised by our violence in the media lecture.  I didn't realize how intense it was, or that by not showing blood and gore we are teaching that there are no consequences.  This made me really nervous, as I'm trying to navigate what rules my husband and I will create for our family about what is ok for our children to watch.  Is there anything that is safe to show our daughter? Watching Venom this week did not help my anxiety over this question.  The movie was awful on a number of levels (don't bother watching it) and definitely could have been rated R if they hadn't cut the camera away from the violence every few seconds.  I felt especially sensitive to it after our lecture, and it made me really frustrated.  Why are we as a culture so drawn to violent acts?  What makes that so thrilling to watch for so many of us?
